CAVE SPRING HIGH SCHOOL QUIZ BOWL TEAM CLAIMS WTVR-6 BATTLE OF THE BRAINS CHAMPIONSHIP.

Their white whale was a Green Dragon. But, unlike Captain Ahab, they finally emerged triumphant.

For four years, the Cave Spring High School Quiz Bowl team had chased the Battle of the Brains title on Richmond’s WTVR-6. Three consecutive years (2009-2011), the Knights were eliminated in the semifinals by the Maggie Walker Green Dragons, the AAA powerhouse from Richmond that won the television title each of those years. The fourth year, Cave Spring lost in the finals to Charlottesville, the team that eliminated Maggie Walker in the 2012 tournament.

In the finals of their fifth try to win Battle of the Brains, the Knights once again faced Maggie Walker. Captain James Cole and the team were ready for the moment. Cole, Maddie Burton and Colin Rooney ran off the first 60 points of the match and never looked back as they rolled to a 350-270 win to claim the title in a match televised June 1.

The Battle of the Brains is a televised single-elimination tournament with teams representing forty Virginia high schools competing in a Jeopardy-like team quiz show that tests knowledge in academic, artistic and current event subjects.

Coach Bob Powers’ team held Walker at bay throughout the four round match, never letting the Green Dragons get closer than 40 points. Each of the Knights, including senior Brett Smith, came up with key answers to defuse any run Walker could make. At the end, Cole took over, scoring the final 120 points for Cave Spring to close out the match.

Cole and Burton also qualified for the series’ All-Star match, based on their individual performance during earlier rounds of the tournament. Cave Spring has qualified at least one member of its squad for the All Star match in each season it has competed.

For the past two seasons as a whole, the CSHS quiz bowl team has been arguably the strongest in Virginia’s AA classification, garnering statewide first and third place finishes in VHSL competition, first and second place finishes in the Battle of the Brains, and a first place finish in the NAQT all-school state championship. Burton, Rooney and Smith, along with Eric Culbertson, Colleen Truskey and Adam Foutz, members of both of those teams, have graduated, leaving Coach Powers with several holes to fill. However, he will be returning one of the state’s premier talents in rising senior Cole, and the Knights should again be considered on the short list of state title contenders, this time in the new Division 3 classification.

The 2013 KJPAS elementary camp at Camp Bethel (July 14-19)  had an outstanding attendance record for our elementary camp of 41 campers. The showcase theme was “Disney on Broadway”. Every camper went home with a professional headshot. The week also featured an acting for film and television workshop and a vocal projection workshop (how to project your voice without damaging your vocal cords!). In addition to theatrical training, the kids  swam in the pool every day, took a wagon ride around camp, stomped in the creek, and participated in a photo scavenger hunt around camp.

Girl Scouts Virginia Skyline is Celebrating 50 years of Success

The 1964 Beetles Tribute band is helping Virginia Skyline Council celebrate 50 years of success on Saturday, July 27th at Fitzpatrick Hall. The public is invited to honor community leaders Sam Lionberger, Jr., Betty Norris, Anita Price and Joyce Waugh. Longtime Girl Scout volunteers are being recognized. Music, dinner and dance tickets can be purchased at www.gsvsc.org/50Birthday.

In my years as a girl member, a troop leader for my daughters and as a high adventure group coordinator, I have seen girl’s visions for the future dramatically change. I have witnessed hope where there was none and confidence in self when fear was overcome. The Girl Scout leadership program for girls works. Girl Scouting is more than sports, more than academics and more than community service. Girl Scouting builds greatness in every girl.

The timeless values of serving God and County to make the world a better place resonate today as much as they did in 1912 when Juliette Low founded the Girl Scouts. The Girl Scout program builds courage, confidence and character. Our goal is to provide an inclusive program that provides support for dreams to become reality and change the world – one girl at a time.

Reunion groups are collecting memories of campfires shared, badges earned and trips planned. Send your recollections to communications@gsvsc.org\

It’s always fun when running into former Roanoke County school principal Ron Weaver such as at the recent Avett Brothers concert in Roanoke. One of the friendliest people we know, Ron always remembers our names and brings on the laughs when we see him though it’s been over 10 years since our kids went to his Back Creek Elementary.

Building relationships is the focus of the Colonial Avenue Baptist mission trips. Having served in Shelby, NC last year with missionary Cecelia Beck we decided to invite her and some folks from there to help us serve our own Roanoke city neighbors. Working out of the 17th St Baptist Community Center with tireless missionary Pat Carter was a great experience for all. Besides working with kids at 17th St we had a neighborhood dinner and outdoor movie, helped renovate a room in the center, spent some time at Feeding America on Route 419, landscaped and cleaned a nearby house and spread mulch. Following our work week we shared some of the local sights with our Shelby friends such as the Mill Mountain Star, the Cascades and Virginia Tech. A continuing relationship with Shelby and in downtown Roanoke has been a great combination of serving here and there.

Photos: South Peak Grand Opening

You may have noticed the construction going on at the top of the mountain near Tanglewood Mall and Route 220 in Southwest County. You may have noticed the large South Peak sign on the side of the mountain as well. “So many people have been wondering what’s happening up here,” said Jim Smith, the South Peak Developer. Now, it’s no longer a mystery… the two-day South Peak Grand Opening celebration, which took place on June 1 and 2, was a huge success with hundreds of people visiting The Peaks luxury condominium residences.

Visitors were able to see the completed community room, grand entranceway, the information center as well as the designer-furnished models. Jim Smith, even opened up his beautiful third floor residence for visitors to enjoy. After the tour, visitors were invited to a barbeque lunch and were treated to a concert by the Smith Mountain Bluegrass band.

According to a press release from South Peak, “We were pleased by the number of people who are considering the purchase of a residence,” said Jeff Barbic, director of sales and marketing. “There are always a large number of curiosity seekers when something like this opens to the public, but the overall response and genuine interest in The Peaks surpassed our expectations.” So far, 12 of the 32 residences in the building have been selected for purchase. Plans call for construction to begin on a second, similar sized building when half of the initial units are sold.

The Peaks condominiums are not the only option for living at South Peak. The luxury community is also offering home sites for single-family homes. These homes will be located in a gated community called The Estates. Construction for the homes is expected to begin in late summer or early fall. When finished, South Peak will offer residential homes, condominium residences, restaurants, retail shopping, office buildings and even a hotel. You can read more about South Peak on their website: www.southpeak.net or by calling (540) 904-2403.

A nice 4 mile roundtrip Appalachian trail hike begins at Blue Ridge Parkway mile marker 51.7 and takes you south up Bluff Mountain. A co-worker’s ancestor was Ottie Powell, a 4 year old boy who got lost and died on the mountain in the late 1800′s. Besides a marker about Ottie on top of the mountain there is also a great view of the valley below, Buena Vista to Lexington.

Sunset and sunrise are definitely the best times to visit McAfee Knob. The views are much clearer than the usual haze of mid-day. My friend Patrick Kamau of Kenya and I camped there recently to witness both the sunset and sunrise. We shared the hour around sunset with an Appalachian Trail through-hiker named Nomad who entertained us with stories from his hike from Georgia to Virginia and from the book he is writing while on the trail . Sunrise was worth getting up for as the Peaks of Otter and other mountains rose out of a sea of fog in the valleys below as the sun came up with amazing colors.
