Grandparents all over the country were celebrated on Saturday, September 8. Grandparents Day was established by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. He proclaimed that the first Sunday after Labor Day would always be known as the special day for Grandparents around the country.
Here in Roanoke, grandparents were honored at Tanglewood Mall with the theme, “Dick Clarks’ American Bandstand.” There was live music at the event, complete with hula hoop contests, ugliest leisure suit contests, Monster Mash, and much more. Volunteers offered guests free treats like hotdogs and cherry coke and there was even a magician performing tricks for the crowd. The sponsors for this event were Generation Solutions, Richfield Retirement and WDBJ7.
